Sir Nigel Gresley was the most renowned of 20th Century British locomotive designers and was even knighted for the excellence of the fine engines which he created. Among the greatest of Gresley's accomplishments were the streamlined A4 Pacifics which routinely exceeded speeds of 100 miles-per-hour on the London & North Eastern Railway. No. 4498 was named for her designer and the famed locomotive, built by the LNER in 1935, hauls mainline excursions, such as the "Cumbrian Mountain Pullman", shown at Aisgill on October 2, 1982.
